Blessings in a Backpack

Blessings in a Backpack comes to St. Matthew’s:

Recently we were approached by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and asked if we would be interested in helping support their participation in the Blessings in a Backpack program. BIB is a national program whose mission is to mobilize communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on weekends for elementary school children who might otherwise go hungry.

St. Paul’s has partnered with Seymour Elementary in Syracuse to provide backpacks for 100 students. Their goal is to provide a backpack for every student in need at Seymour. In the case of Seymour, that is their student body approximately, 560+ students. Towards their goal, they have asked St. Matthew’s, along with other churches in the community, to help.

– Contribute requested food items. The backpacks contain specific items that are child friendly as well as nutritious. Every couple of months we will be requesting a specific item for the backpacks. This month we are asking for fruit cups of peaches and/or pears in 100% juice (any brand). A bin has been placed in hall by the coats.

Drop off on Sundays or during the week in the church office from 9am-12pm.  *(does not have to be Kraft brand… any mac and cheese microwave cups are acceptable)

– Consider sponsoring a child. As little as $100 provides hunger-free weekends to a child for an entire school year.  But remember, any amount helps!

– Volunteer! St. Paul’s is looking for some help packing those 100 backpacks (which are actually plastic bags). The time and dates are coming! A bulletin board is in the works with more information and brochures.
